NewOps 7 – Addon Domains

Click here to get your domain and hosting.

Many of you have other domain names that you want to use with your new hosting account.Today we’re going to learn how to “point” those domains and “addon” the domain name to the hosting you just bought. This allows you to build unlimited websites without having to pay for additional hosting accounts.

Once again, it’s point and click simple…

  • 1. Go to yourdomain.com/cpanel and copy your nameservers.
  • 2. Go to your domain name registrar.
  • 3. Log in and find the nameservers for the domain you want to use.
  • 4. Change the nameservers to the ones you copied in step 1.
  • 5. Go back to yourdomain.com/cpanel and click on “Addon Domains”
  • 6. Add your domain.

Done!

IMPORTANT NOTE: At this point you should already have your holding domain and a hosting package. If you want to purchase additional domains to use as addons DON’T buy them at Hostgator’s home page. You don’t want to pay for hosting again. Hostgator gives you the ability to register domains without a hosting package through a service called Registry Rocket (click here). That is where you should purchase additional domains to use as addons. You can easily manage your domains there too, so it’s easy to change your domain name servers.

If you haven’t gotten your hosting account set up yet, click here to do it now.

I think you can see all the possibilities that this opens up. Now you know how to make as many websites as you want, all on one account. In the not too distant future you will have a bunch of sites out there working for you 24-7.

Talk soon,

-Steve

P.S. Keep thinking about your niche. What inspires you? What are you good at? It will soon be time to start building something for real so put your thinking cap on…

It’s the ca-ching without spending more jingle.

In regards to the members finding their special niche, I’d like to suggest for them to click on their “Favorites” tab and view the many sites (or interest) they have saved – this may jog some thoughts for them.
I’d also like to extend a very special “Thanks” to you & Alyssa for all the help you provided over the Holiday weekend !

You don’t need to buy another domain until you’re ready to start a business on it. At the moment I run seven separate businesses all on one hosting package. That’s sixty dollars a month that I don’t have to spend.

Jill

This is really getting interesting! I have been thinking of the Niche, for my next website. Does it have to be related to the holding domain or can it be a completely different topic/business? Will people be able to tell that the sites are linked? Will it effect how your site(s) are rated for web searches if they are unrelated? Sorry for so many questions, my mind is spinning with ideas.

Steve

No problem Jill,
1. It does not have to be related. It can be completely different.
2. No one will be able to tell the sites are linked.
3. It won’t affect your ranking in the search engines no matter if they are related or not. They are treated as completely separate websites. The only exception to that is if you link from one site to the other. We’ll cover that soon.
GREAT questions!!!

My add on web page CandymanSnackShop.com says MilwaukeeHotDogCo.com above the header. How do I fix this?

Reply

Steve

Go to your dashboard. Under Settings > General you can change your site title. Further down on that page you can choose whether or not to display the site title above the header.

Still missing something. How do I get my domain from the current provider over to my hosting at hostgator?

Reply

Steve

You need to tell your domain registrar to point your name servers to your Hostgator hosting account. Your nameservers can be found toward the bottom left corner of your cpanel. They are two of them and they should look something like this:
ns7834.hostgator.com and ns7835.hostgator.com

Karyl

Never mind! Got it! Thanks

ARGHHHHHH! It’s telling me I can’t park my main domain.

Karl,
No, you can’t “park” your MAIN domain cuz it’s the “MAIN” one that all the “other” domains you register points (redirects) to! Just regester your “OTHER” domains that you like and in the control panel have them “point” to your “MAIN” domain and you will have a plethora of websites to make money from! In other words if you type in example .com it will redirect to your “main domain” such as hotdogs. com etc.

Steve

Right on Donn.

Douglas Grever

I followed the video, created a new domain, DougsDogHouse.com. When I punch in my site it comes up with my hosting domain GreverOrp.com

other than that, I think it went well

Thanks Steve

The domain name DougsDogHouse.com is coming up fine in the browser window. You just forgot to change the site title when you installed Wordpress on your new domain.

In the dashboard go to to Settings > General and change the site title to Doug’s Dog House.

Easy peasy!

I created the ‘main’ domain page and not sure what I will put there but the one I am most concerned with creating is what would be one of my spokes. At this point in time the spoke is the one to create. Do I just act like I am creating the first one and then do the nameserver that you teach here? I understand there is another $15 registration fee for the name but how do I create w/o paying for another hosting pack? And can I use the ‘hub’ to create a blog? Thanks. It is simple yet complicated, at this point.

You can get a new domain name without hosting at http://hostgator.com/domains

Then just follow the instructions in this lesson to set it up as an addon domain to your existing hosting package.

Easy peasy, ham and cheesy.

I “collect” domain names at GoDaddy.com also. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one. I found qualityhotdogs.com available, and thought why not. I just redirected it to hawksdawgs.com until I could figure out what to do with it.
